Summary

Introducing Little Clothbound Classics: irresistible, mini editions of short stories, novellas and essays from the world's greatest writers, designed by the award-winning Coralie Bickford-Smith。

Celebrating the range and diversity of Penguin Classics, they take us from snowy Japan to springtime Vienna, from haunted New England to a sun-drenched Mediterranean island, and from a game of chess on the ocean to a love story on the moon。 Beautifully designed and printed, these collectible editions are bound in colourful, tactile cloth and stamped with foil。

Arguably America's most influential short story writer, Edgar Allan Poe's tales of suspense never fail to spook and amaze。 Gathered in this selection are his very best horror stories, including the gothic tour de force 'The Fall of the House of Usher', the other-worldly 'The Masque of the Red Death', and the murderous 'The Tell-Tale Heart'。

'The most original genius that America has produced' Alfred, Lord Tennyson

Spoilers for everything written by Poe。I really like Edgar Allen Poe, even though most of his work comes to three conclusions。 If it's a poem, the gist usually is: "She's dead。 I miss her。" Most of his short stories break down to two endings in this gothic choose your own adventure setting。 Mind you, for each ending, it must be narrated by someone who is becoming or is already raving mad:Scenario One: "The Professor ran down the hall and burst into the room。 I heard him cry Mercy once, then emit Spoilers for everything written by Poe。I really like Edgar Allen Poe, even though most of his work comes to three conclusions。 If it's a poem, the gist usually is: "She's dead。 I miss her。" Most of his short stories break down to two endings in this gothic choose your own adventure setting。 Mind you, for each ending, it must be narrated by someone who is becoming or is already raving mad:Scenario One: "The Professor ran down the hall and burst into the room。 I heard him cry Mercy once, then emit an unearthly wail。 When I reached him, he was already cold to the touch and through open eyes I saw he was already dead!"Scenario Two: "After the flash of lightning I looked towards the top of the stairs, to behold the shape of my wife Evangeline。 She pointed a finger towards me and opened her mouth as to speak。 I let out an unearthly wail, as Evangeline has been dead over a year!" 。。。more

Just goes to show, when reading a compendium of works you learn why the author's most famous works are so - and also why you've never heard of the others。Poe has plenty of both。 The titular Masque of the Red Death, alongside William Wilson, Ligaea, The Pit and the Pendulum and Hop-Frog are excellent - grim, grisly portraits of human horror, paced perfectly to encapsulate singular moments of things dark and vile, seen and unseen。However, there are plenty of other works that, to a modern reader, a Just goes to show, when reading a compendium of works you learn why the author's most famous works are so - and also why you've never heard of the others。Poe has plenty of both。 The titular Masque of the Red Death, alongside William Wilson, Ligaea, The Pit and the Pendulum and Hop-Frog are excellent - grim, grisly portraits of human horror, paced perfectly to encapsulate singular moments of things dark and vile, seen and unseen。However, there are plenty of other works that, to a modern reader, are rather more predictable, uninteresting, forgettable, and often impenetrably verbose。 I did not need a three page description of a school that has a bearing on maybe one single scene - and sometimes the degree of furiously over-wrought introspection of a first person narrator describing his terror, horror, madness, or some other affliction, are so overdone they leap, like The Castle of Otranto straight out of being scary and right into being hilarious。Also, I found that even this small a book was too much to consume in one sitting。 You can only take so much Poe at a time, it turns out。Still, if you want to read the classics, you could do far far worse - the best stories are very good indeed。 Just bear in mind that you can, in my view, definitely skip the ones you haven't heard of。 。。。more

The stories that I loved were absolutely a 5 but the book is a collection and was overall brought down by the stories that were closer to a 2。 I would like to mention that I must have forgotten that poe is referred to as the father of modern horror and gothic creep。 I was disturbed。 Yeah I couldn't stop thinking about certain stories and my sleep definitely suffered。 The stories that I loved were absolutely a 5 but the book is a collection and was overall brought down by the stories that were closer to a 2。 I would like to mention that I must have forgotten that poe is referred to as the father of modern horror and gothic creep。 I was disturbed。 Yeah I couldn't stop thinking about certain stories and my sleep definitely suffered。 。。。more

I’ve come to the conclusion that i don’t really enjoy or like Poe, or at least don’t enjoy him for the right reasons, much of his “elements of terror” are there just to suffice his needs to expose a philosophical argument and he is, to me, incredibly tedious in doing so, however i do enjoy his little scary stuff hence why i say i enjoy the stories for the wrong reasons, The masque of the red dead is where I feel he blended both this elements to perfection, a great philosophical discussion on wea I’ve come to the conclusion that i don’t really enjoy or like Poe, or at least don’t enjoy him for the right reasons, much of his “elements of terror” are there just to suffice his needs to expose a philosophical argument and he is, to me, incredibly tedious in doing so, however i do enjoy his little scary stuff hence why i say i enjoy the stories for the wrong reasons, The masque of the red dead is where I feel he blended both this elements to perfection, a great philosophical discussion on wealth, morality and the fragility of life and the macabre of it all。 。。。more

I read this as part of my Stephen King reference-to-reference reading challenge and as part of a Poe buddy read。 This short story was mentioned several times in "The Shining," so I think I set my expectations a little too high going into it since that is my new favorite King story。 In general, I do not *love* most short stories (always needing more!!), and it was the same with this。 It was good, but it just felt too short。 I read this as part of my Stephen King reference-to-reference reading challenge and as part of a Poe buddy read。 This short story was mentioned several times in "The Shining," so I think I set my expectations a little too high going into it since that is my new favorite King story。 In general, I do not *love* most short stories (always needing more!!), and it was the same with this。 It was good, but it just felt too short。 。。。more

And now was acknowledged the presence of Red Death。 He had come like a thief in the night。 And one by one dropped the revellers in the blood-bedewed halls of their revel, and died each in his despairing posture of his fall。 And the life of the ebony clock went out with that of the last of the gay。 And the flames of the tripods expired。 And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all。

I just cannot get into the writing of edgar Allan Poe and this was no exception。 It was stilted to read and to some extent repetitive

Russell Grant

Familiarity with many of these stories due to their appearances in other media took some of the surprise value away from me, but that said, they mostly stand on their own as rightful classics。 This anthology (the Penguin Red Series) is a strong one with most of the popular ones (no THE RAVEN though)。 My favourite is still THE TELL TALE HEART。

Edgar Allen Poe inspires such feelings of creepiness while reading his short stories, that one feels almost haunted by supernatural。 And the English weather is perfectly suited to the reading。 I don't claim to like all his stories, but I'm surely enthralled by all of them。 The fall of the house of usher, the black cat and the tell-tale heart were by far my favorite short stories。 Edgar Allen Poe inspires such feelings of creepiness while reading his short stories, that one feels almost haunted by supernatural。 And the English weather is perfectly suited to the reading。 I don't claim to like all his stories, but I'm surely enthralled by all of them。 The fall of the house of usher, the black cat and the tell-tale heart were by far my favorite short stories。 。。。more

I do struggle with Poe but found this little volume of some of his work easier to get through than others。However even if I'm not quite understanding what is going on in the story his way with words is always beautiful and second to none。 My personal fave shorts from this collection are some of his lesser known such as The oval portrait, The black cat, Hop frog and William Wilson。I would recommend this as a nice introduction to the mans work for anyone that's curious。 I do struggle with Poe but found this little volume of some of his work easier to get through than others。However even if I'm not quite understanding what is going on in the story his way with words is always beautiful and second to none。 My personal fave shorts from this collection are some of his lesser known such as The oval portrait, The black cat, Hop frog and William Wilson。I would recommend this as a nice introduction to the mans work for anyone that's curious。 。。。more

Do you like the movie Eyes Wide Shut? Because I can't watch that movie without seeing the ending of this story。 Would've been a better movie that way, I think。And this song? All I can visualize when I hear it is this story。https://www。youtube。com/watch?v=PcC-R。。。I just start seeing all sorts of masquerading entities just waiting for the red plague to take them to their deaths。 With David Bowie (a la Jareth) in Labyrinth。https://www。youtube。com/watch?v=VppuD。。。My point is, this story is spooky as Do you like the movie Eyes Wide Shut? Even though this is just a short story, Poe's prodigious use of poetic devices leave much to the imagination。 That no wealth can save you from death; the start contrasts, the beauty in the end and the protagonist himself; all enigmatic and revealing metaphorical tales at the same time。 Even though this is just a short story, Poe's prodigious use of poetic devices leave much to the imagination。 That no wealth can save you from death; the start contrasts, the beauty in the end and the protagonist himself; all enigmatic and revealing metaphorical tales at the same time。 。。。more

Edgar Allan Poe is such a delight。 A couple of these short stories weren't the greatest (Eleonora, The Oval Portrait, and William Wilson were just a big ~eh~), but basically this was a fab li'l collection of classic gothic horror。 Although Poe does kill off a cat in one of these stories which I am NOT a fan of him doing。 Edgar Allan Poe is such a delight。 A couple of these short stories weren't the greatest (Eleonora, The Oval Portrait, and William Wilson were just a big ~eh~), but basically this was a fab li'l collection of classic gothic horror。 Although Poe does kill off a cat in one of these stories which I am NOT a fan of him doing。 。。。more

E。A。 Poe, the stories here are well selected。 Having not read Poe for some years I struggled at first with the mid nineteenth century text。 However once I got into it I found it easy to read, House of Usher is chilling still and although in my minds eye Roderick Usher bore a remarkable resemblance to Vincent Price! And also Prince Prospero in Masque of the Red Death。 A worthy addition to any Horror Collection。 Classic Horror is still good to go back to。 A bloody good time was had。 Sweet Dreams m E。A。 Poe, the stories here are well selected。 Having not read Poe for some years I struggled at first with the mid nineteenth century text。 However once I got into it I found it easy to read, House of Usher is chilling still and although in my minds eye Roderick Usher bore a remarkable resemblance to Vincent Price!
